 Aluminum alloys are divided into two groups as heat treatable and non-heat treatable:

1. Heat treatable aluminum alloys: bearing alloys containing high copper (2011, 2014, 2017 and 2024), silicon alloys (4032), magnesium-silicon alloys (6062) and high zinc alloys (7075) fall into this group.

2. Non-heat treatable aluminum alloys: high purity (above 99%) aluminums and alloys such as 1100, 3003, 3004 and 5052 aluminum alloys fall into this group. Their strength depends on the degree of cold working after annealing and deteriorates with subsequent heat treatment obtained by cold working. It cannot be restored unless an additional heat treatment is done.
